Redhead Wing Duck, Philadelphia School c1860

Redhead wing duck, pre Civil War.  Made in the Philadelphia/Blair school style, most likely by Albert "AB" Vance.  This style decoy has been found from the Currituck Shooting Club, in North Carolina, and the Ottawa Shooting Club in Ohio.  They have been referred to as "Ohio Blair's", and Type 3 Blair's, but research done by Russ Allen suggests they were most likely made by Vance in Philadelphia and sold to the wealthy Philly residents who took them to these duck hunting hot spots.  Very worn original paint.

  Paul Gibson Canvasback Pair
Very rare pair of "Sleepers" by Paul Gibson of Havre de Grace, MD.  These decoys were made in the late 1950's or early 1960's.  They are in near perfect--but used--original paint; and they are in excellent structural condition--no neck cracks or repairs. Mr. Gibson (1902-1984) began carving decoys as a teenager and continued to carve until late in his life. According to Henry Fleckenstein, Gibson bought Madison Mitchell's duplicating lathe in the 1030's and used it throughout his later years of production.

George Lockard Canvasback Drake

George Lockard made far fewer decoys than his brother Henry Lockard did; so his decoys are rarer and harder to find, particularly one in as good condition as this one is. It is structurally sound--no body or neck cracks; and the decoy appears to have been hardly used after it was last painted, which I estimate was done in the 1940'sor 50's.

Paul Gibson Canvasback Drake

Paul Gibson (1902-1984) was the chief of the Fire Department at the Edgewood Arsenal and he lived in Havre de Grace, MD, where he made his decoys in a shop behind his house.  This decoy is marked ith a conjoind HL for the rig of Harry Lingenfelter of Baltimore, MD.  When I firt saw the mark on this decoy, I had trouble imagining how it was done.  Eventually a friend, Jim Lockard, explained that it was made with a timber stamp--a tool that timber companies use to mark the ends of logs.
